FROM IDEAS TO DEMOS

Monday, February 28th, 2022 7:15 PM - 8:30 PM

Our thanks, to Ideator in Residence, Patricia Bradby, for inviting Tom Hohman to speak to the students of the Masters of Product Innovation Program at Virginia Commonwealth University’s da Vinci Center for Innovation. Tom will be addressing the the subject of prototyping, from ideation and models to full scale working demonstrators. With examples from Hohman Design’s ten years in Richmond, students will be exposed to a survey that will include crude ideation models, ergonomic and user interface studies, scale models, rapid prototyping methods to include molding, casting and 3D printing, and even the boutique manufacture of fully functioning product demos. We can all practice better design through prototyping. This presentation is sure to benefit novices and experts alike.

APOLLO: WHEN WE WENT TO THE MOON

October, 16th and 17th, 2021

Hohman Design celebrates the Apollo Program with the Discovery Place Science Museum in Charlotte North Carolina! Join us October 16th and 17th 2021 for the APOLLO: WHEN WE WENT TO THE MOON exhibition. Come see the phenomenal and humbling artifacts from the space race on loan from the US Space and Rocket Center. In addition to the many remarkable pieces of aerospace engineering, other vignettes highlight the backdrop of politics, war, and civil struggle that surrounded and motivated the race to the moon. Hohman Design will bring their 1:70th scale flying Saturn V model rocket and 3D printed launch tower in addition to their Apollo themed launch controller to mark the opening of the exhibit. Join us for 3D printing demonstrations of how the scale launch tower and gantry were made and see prototypes of how the launch controller was developed with interactive displays. See you there!

IT’S GREAT TO COLLABORATE WITH FRIENDS

September, 2021

Our friend Jason Lefton founded Big Secret, the nations most artful laser studio. Jason asked Hohman Design if we’d join a project of his for Two Sigma. We were honored. Big Secret engraves, etches, and laser cuts the broadest range of materials we’re aware of. Furthermore, it consistently produces the most creative results we’ve seen in laser centered design and laser manufacturing. It was a treat to work with Jason and the team at Two Sigma on a series of tenure awards. Two Sigma is a legendary investment company, one that's known for developing trading strategies at the leading edge of technological innovation and A.I. The design brief was the perfect high-end design and fabrication challenge for Big Secret and one for which we were thrilled to make our contribution.

HOHMAN DESIGN HEADS TO THE BARCADE

May, 2020

Hohman Design is delighted, having reached the successful completion of our collaboration with AMF Bowling. The meteoric return to fashion of duckpin bowling is one that has been in step with the Arcade, Food and Entertainment Complexes Industry. There are four new barcades right here in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond, which is now the number one destination of millennials in the state of Virginia. So, it was with great pleasure that we welcomed the invitation to work with AMF Bowling, and vision cast with them, in anticipation of their entry to the market. A delightful brief was matched by the enthusiasm of the team at AMF and we can’t wait to see what the future looks like for AMF in duckpin bowling.

HOHMAN DESIGN HOSTS BRIDGEPARK DESIGN CHARRETTE

July, 22, 2019

Hohman Design had a great time brainstorming with BridgePark RVA. The collaboration addressed signs and way-finding for the proposed park, ancillary events, social media activations and other marketing purposes. Tom Hohman joined Ted Elmore (BridgePark President), Johnny Hugel (Consultant), and Dustin Correale (Designer), for a round of kinematic ideation followed by some scale modeling of a number of the concepts generated. It’s always a treat to get creative with friends and colleagues, especially when the focal point is one that’s as inspired as BridgePark. Thanks Ted! Check out, and be sure to support BridgePark.

MAKERS GONNA MAKE

April, 25th - 27th, 2019

Hope you had as much fun as we did at Spring Make 19 in Cleveland Ohio. It was great to see familiar friends in the making community, as well as make some new ones. The keynotes were wonderful, including those from Tamara Robertson, Laura Kampf and Jimmy DiResta. But this convention knows the magic happens in the interstitial spaces, the cross pollination and the relationships formed. So it’s the constant making in the impromptu shop spaces, killer photo sessions with @markadamspictures, and the well conceived evening socials that see Spring Make rise to become a highlight of our year.

SHEPARD FAIREY DESIGNS CURRENT LOGO

We are pleased to announce that Shepard Fairey has just unveiled his logo for the CURRENT Art Fair. Hohman Design is hosting the inaugural fair this October, here at our studio warehouse in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond Virginia. We are just blocks away from the landmark radio-tower on Broad Street that served as an inspiration to @obeygiant as he designed the logo for the upcoming event. The brand successfully combines the unique industrial-deco flavor of the area with some of Fairey’s signature take on retro-WPA iconography.
